Obituary

Perry Sykes, 61, of Springfield, Illinois, passed away peacefully on September 25th 2025, surrounded by those who loved him most.

Born on January 24, 1964, in Hayti, Missouri, Perry was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose presence brought laughter, warmth, and unwavering loyalty to all who knew him. He was the devoted husband of Carrie Sykes of Springfield, Illinois, and the proud father of Perry Sykes Jr. of Jacksonville, Illinois; Jah’lone Perry Sykes of Springfield, Illinois; Erica Curtis ( Lance Curtis)of Columbia, Missouri; Nina Sykes of Springfield, Illinois; Denise Jackson (Terry Jackson) of Springfield, Illinois; and Kizzy Jackson (Chevus Jackson) of Jacksonville, Illinois.

Perry dedicated over 17 years of his life to caring for others as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Arcadia Care on the Hill. His natural ability to comfort and care for those in need was more than a job—it was a reflection of the kind of man he was; selfless, patient, and deeply compassionate.

A true soul of the South at heart, Perry found peace and joy in the simple pleasures of life. He never missed a chance to head down I-55 South, chasing memories, fresh watermelon, and good company. He loved fishing, spending time with his large and loving family, and relaxing with his two dogs, Tiny and Kaito, who were like family themselves. He especially enjoyed gathering with friends to play dominoes—or as he called it, “bones”—where his competitive spirit and sense of humor always shone through.

Perry is survived by his brothers Dennis Ray Sykes (Jaqueline Lane) of Springfield, Illinois; Roy Jones Jr. (Leantha Jones) of Farmington, Missouri; and Calvin Gilmore (Shatwanna Gilmore) of Cape Girardeau, Missouri. His sisters Emma Wilson of Jacksonville, Illinois; Cora Jones of Carbondale, Illinois; Bernice Jones of Mexico, Missouri; Joyce Wilson of Memphis, Tennessee; and Beverly Taper-Alston (Tyreese Alston) of Texas. 27 beautiful grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

He was predeceased by his mother Minnie Jones- Sykes and father Leroy Sykes. Though Perry’s love for family was fierce and unmatched, those who knew him best could always joke that he might have traded them all for a truck bed full of watermelon or a whole one of Emma Jean’s sweet potato pies. His wit, loyalty, and unshakable sense of self made him unforgettable. To know him would be to owe him. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love, and unforgettable stories. Though he may no longer walk beside us, Perry’s spirit will live on in the laughter of his children, the stories of his friends, and the love he gave so freely.
