Obituary

Judith Jelks departed this life on Thursday, October 16, 2025. Judith Carolyn Jelks was born January 19, 1948, in Decatur, Illinois, to Henry Lee and Mary Elizabeth Roberson. Judith affectionately, known as Judi or Cookie, had many careers in her life, all devoted to caring for others young and old. She worked for Springfield Head Start, Vista AmeriCorps, United Cerebral Palsy of Springfield, and ran her own home daycare with her daughter.

Judi was devoted to the service of the Lord. She was a Sunday school teacher, she traveled with the Finley Singers, sang in many choirs, and was a mother of the church. Mother Judi’s calling in life was to spread the gospel through her unique crafts and creations. When not crafting, studying her Word, or dying her hair, she was surrounded by family, fellowship, and laughter. Through life she faced many struggles, yet her faith never wavered.

Judith Jelks was proceeded in death by her beloved sister, Big Louise; only son, Marcus; and granddaughter, Erica. She leaves to cherish her memories: brothers, Howard Roberson and Treven (Amber) Bolden; daughter, Monique (Selassie) Garsoo; cherished niece, Apostle Renee Jones; grandchildren; Ryan Jelks, Lydia (Robert) Maclin, Rebecca Beard, and Queen Garsoo; special granddaughter, Johnetta (Andrew) Suah; 14 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
