Obituary
Alex Tolar, Sr., transitioned from time to eternity on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois. He was a strong quiet spirit that impacted the lives of so many with his quick humor, joy for life, and love of family.
Born July 14, 1935, in Pickens, Mississippi, he moved to Springfield, Illinois, in 1965.
True to his southern roots and upbringing, he worked hard at several jobs before retiring from Peabody Coal mine. An avid auto mechanic, he loved talking about automobiles, sports, politics, world events, and the good old days.
Mr. Tolar rededicated his life to Jesus Christ, was rebaptized, and joined Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of Pastor Bobbie Hampton, Jr.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Etha Stewart, and sister, Clara Stewart.
He leaves a legacy of nine children, Ruby (Robert) Wells, Kosciusko, Mississippi, Calvin (Debra) Tolar, Cincinnati, Ohio, Alex Tolar, Jr., Springfield, Illinois, Herman (Michele) Tolar, Belleville, Illinois, Melvin (Karen) Tolar, Springfield, Illinois, Dianne Tolar, Belleville, Illinois, Regina Tolar, Springfield, Illinois, Brenda Tolar, Chicago, Illinois, and Nicole Tolar, Springfield, Illinois; 30 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of friends and family.
Mr. Alex Tolar, Sr., as we humbly submit to the will of God, we collectively declare peace on your journey, and a job well done, Sir.
