Obituary

Walter Douglas Whitaker, affectionately known as "Doug" by his family and "Funzo" by his many friends, was born on October 16, 1948, in Tallahassee, Florida. He lived a life defined by service, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the people he loved. A man of remarkable character and boundless energy, Walter was a beacon of encouragement whose presence could light up any room. Known for his booming voice, infectious laughter, and warm spirit, he never met a stranger. He possessed a unique gift for making others feel valued, offering wisdom, support, and a kind word whenever it was needed.

Walter received his formal education through the Leon County Public School System and was a proud graduate of Old Lincoln High School, Class of 1966. The values instilled in him during his formative years would become the foundation upon which he built a life of service, leadership, and community involvement.

Following his education, Walter dedicated much of his professional life to public service through education. For nearly 40 years, he faithfully served within the Leon County School System, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students during his tenure at James S. Rickards High School. More than an educator, Walter was a mentor, role model, and father figure to countless young people whose lives were forever changed by his guidance, encouragement, and genuine concern for their success. His influence extended far beyond the classroom, helping shape future leaders and inspiring others to reach their fullest potential.
A true lover of life, Walter found joy in bringing people together. Whether gathered around a grill preparing a meal for family and friends or sharing stories filled with humor and wisdom, he created moments that became cherished memories. He was a passionate sports enthusiast who proudly supported Florida A&M University athletics and remained a devoted fan of the Dallas Cowboys. His enthusiasm for sports was only surpassed by his love for people.

On June 17, 2026, at the age of 77, Walter answered the Master's call and entered into eternal rest. Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a legacy that will endure for generations. Walter's kindness, wisdom, humor, and unwavering love will forever remain in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
Family was the foundation of Walter's life. He cherished his beloved wife, Jazzie Whitaker, and was a devoted father to Douglas (Kenisha) Whitaker and Robin Herring. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family and celebrating their accomplishments. He was an especially proud grandfather to Chazdin, Robert III, Adrianna, Tiana, Twinte, Kamari, Jamarin, and David, and a loving great-grandfather to Chazdin Miller Jr., Leilani Miller, and Chazdin Miller II. Whether attending sporting events, school activities, or family gatherings, Walter could always be found cheering on those he loved with unmatched enthusiasm, pride, and affection.

Walter was preceded in death by his father, Walter Whitaker; his mother, Mary Austin; his son, Robert Miller, Jr.; and his beloved grandson, Timothy Herring.
His life was a testament to the power of encouragement, the importance of family, the value of service, and the joy of living each day to the fullest. Though he is no longer with us in body, his spirit will continue to inspire, uplift, and guide all who were fortunate enough to call him family, friend, mentor, or simply "Funzo."

"Well done, thy good and faithful servant." - Matthew 25:23
