Obituary

Vernell Woody was born in Otter Creek, Florida, to the late Ernestine Oxendine Woody and the late Reholga Woody.

Vernell went to Floral Heights Elementary School, Brownsville Junior High School, and graduated from Miami Northwestern Senior High School.

Immediately after graduating from Miami Northwestern Senior High School, he joined the workforce at Alterman Transport Lines, where he worked his way up to supervisor on the loading dock. He retired after serving more than 40 years at Alterman Transport Lines.

In the early 1970s he met the love of his life, Viola and they were married in 1979. They were dedicated to each other. Vernell helped Viola raise their son Greg.

Vernell was a man of integrity. He was a very reliable, dependable person. He was kindhearted, and always willing to help others no matter what the cause. He was our barbecue pit master for both the Woody and Oxendine Family reunions.

He loved life and his family. There was nothing he would not do for his family. He had a heart of gold.

He was called home to GOD on Monday, April 13, 2026 at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

He leaves to mourn: his wife, Viola Woody; son, Greg; sisters, Mildred Robinson of Gainesville, FL, Elizabeth Mack (Hosea), of Miami, FL, Castella Woody King (Paul) of Chicago, IL, and Rosa Mae Roberts of Miami, FL; brother, Elijah Woody (Ethel) of Miami, FL; sisters-in-law, Lee Taylor, Earnestine Coward (Ray) of Baltimore, MD, and Reatha Smith of Miami, FL; grandchildren, Joshua, Tanzania, and Zaire, and great-grand, Amiri; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other sorrowing relatives and friends.
