Obituary
Rodney McGahee, widely known as “Poke,” was a great man. He was born on September 16, 1960, at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. Born after his fraternal twin brother, Ronald McGahee, Rodney was the last of ten children born to his mother, Louise McGahee, and father, Willis McGahee, Sr.
A true Grover, Rodney was a diehard Canes and Miami Dolphins fan for life. He was known all throughout South Florida for being a menace on the football field as a Defensive End for Coral Gables Senior High School and Bethune Cookman College. Off the field, he was a playful giant, full of joy and laughter.
He was a giving man. In many cases, he put others before himself, usually serving behind the scenes for many, but never one to brag or boast about it. To some, he was a listening ear and to others, a helping hand. Above all, Rodney McGahee was amongst the greatest of fathers, pouring his love, wisdom, and strength into his children, teaching and guiding and preparing them for the world to come. He was a proud father who wanted all to know and see that his great accomplishment was the success of his children.
Rodney spent 20 years working as a Senior Detention Officer at the Department of Juvenile Justice Detention Center. Known as an “Enforcer,” he was revered for his discipline but respected for fairness and reasoning behind his actions. He later served 17 years working as a Behavioral Health Technician at Jackson Memorial Hospital where he retired as “the legend,” serving in the same capacity as his previous career.
On July 3, 2025, 4:07 p.m., at the age of 64, Rodney closed his eyes to rest. He leaves behind five siblings, Annie Smith, Willis McGahee, Jr., Andrea Watkins, Valerie Davis, and Ronald McGahee; one brother-in-law, Mitchell Butler, Jr; five children, Jacquel Burke, Jamal Parms, Rodney Allen, Vermen Moore, and Jarred McGahee; and five grandchildren, Jaylynn Allen, Glenn Williams III, Erick Johnson, Jamaica Williams, and Jalen Stevens; and a host of cousins including his niece and best friend, Altamese Butler Jawed, Millicent Allen, and Betsy McCray.
He will forever be loved, missed, and respected as a family man, permanently cementing his legacy, having set a foundation for his family to build upon.
