Obituary

Brother Nolan Benjamin Lyles, Sr., a proud United States Marine veteran, dedicated North Dade Thunderbird, beloved father, brother, and pioneer in his field, gained his heavenly wings at the age of 79 years old on June 18, 2025.

Born on October 17, 1945, in Opa-Locka, Florida, to the late Henry Lyles, Sr., and Eula Lyles-Thomas, Nolan was one of five children. He was a proud and devoted brother to Anthony Lyles, Sandra-Lee Lyles, the late Henry Lyles, Jr., and the late Alberta Pitts (Lyles) to whom he was affectionally known as “Biscuit.” Nolan was always blessed with an entrepreneurial spirit, and as a boy, he found many ways to earn money to help lighten the burden of his beloved mother including folding and delivering newspapers, providing neighborhood lawn care, and picking up shifts at the local A&P grocery store before and after school.

A proud graduate of North Dade High School, home of the Thunderbirds, Class of 1965, Nolan remained deeply connected to his classmates throughout his life. His school pride was unmatched, and he often credited his formative years at North Dade with shaping his work ethic and lifelong friendships.

Following high school, Nolan proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served with distinction. His time as a Marine was marked by honor, discipline, and deep patriotism—values that stayed with him throughout his life. He was honorably discharged after his years of faithful service, forever proud to have worn the uniform of a United States Marine.

Once his military career came to an end, Nolan resumed his steadfast pursuit of excellence in the grocery store and supply industry and there his calling was revealed to the world. For decades, Nolan dedicated himself to mastering the craft, becoming a highly respected figure as a store manager for Publix and Walmart. His hard work and excellence earned him a historic place in Publix’s legacy as the first Black store manager in Publix’s history—a feat that opened the doors for countless Black Americans who followed and an achievement he held with great pride.

Though his personal life saw many chapters, Nolan dedicated his latter years to claiming new life in Jesus Christ and bridging the gap that time wedged between his family members. Nolan’s greatest pride was always his family. He is survived by his beloved children, Nolan B. Lyles, Jr., Dwight Lyles, Shevette Lyles, Sabrina Dupree, Tijuana Dupree, Aaron Lyles, Sandra Williams (Lyles), Edward Lyles, Nolanzo Lyles, Eulaunda Lyles, and Rolando Lyles.

He also leaves behind a legacy that spans generations—a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and cherished friends, all of whom were touched by his warmth, humor, and unwavering dedication.
