Obituary

Jura was born on January 25, 1937, to the late Jason Beckwith and the late Annie Deborah Beckwith in Mount Pleasant, Florida. She was the fourth born of six children and was preceded in death by two siblings, Eva Doris Williams and her only brother, Leroy Beckwith. She attended Trinity C.M.E. Church then Metropolitan A.M.E. Church. The family later moved to Miami when Jura was three years old, and she enrolled in Liberty City Elementary School and attended St. James A.M.E. Church. Jura graduated from Dorsey High School, Class of 1955. She later met and married Arthur Atheal Thompkins; two children were born from this union.

In 1968, Jura and family moved to Carol City, where she became a member of Mount Hermon Α.Μ.Ε. Church and a dedicated member of Choir #2, as her mother had at St. James Α.Μ.Ε. Church when she was a child. She looked forward to Sunday School, as she was at one time Secretary of her class, prior to the morning service. We remember a devoted loving mother and a fantastic grandmother of three who she loved spending quality time with. She always told her son, “Do the right thing,” and her daughter, “Do the best that you can”; no one can ask no more than that.

Today, we remember “Jupee,” as she was affectionately called; we remember a legacy of love and a very strong, caring, and independent woman.

On January 23, 2026, Jura was called home to be with the Lord. Her precious memories will forever be cherished by her children, Vanesa Regina Thompkins and Arthur Dwayne Thompkins (Erica Le’Gasi Brown-Thompkins); sisters, Delores “Beckwith” Allen, Bertha “Beckwith” Sneed, and Mattie “Beckwith” Addison; grandchildren, Arthur Dwayne Thompkins II (Caitlin Thompkins), Mia Deborah Vane Thompkins, Christopher Robert Ramirez (Fungai Ramirez), and Shea’Tara; great-granddaughter, Taliah; and a host of nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends whom she cherished and loved.
