Obituary
Gwendolyn Butler was born on February 3, 1953, and was raised in Miami, Florida. She was the beloved daughter of Sadie Kemp and David Toomer. Gwendolyn was one of seven loving children. Her siblings were Chinnie Brownlee Jr., Crezella Brown Koon-Koon, Timothy Brownlee, Hilda Brownlee Thomas, Anne Marie Williams, and Bellie Toomer. She was preceded in death by Chinnie, Timothy, Hilda, and Bellie.
Gwendolyn attended Poinciana Park Elementary School, Allapattah Middle School, and Miami Northwestern Senior High School.
Later in life, Gwendolyn fell in love with and married James Butler. Together, they welcomed their beautiful daughter, Tranay Toomer. James lovingly provided for his wife and made sure she never went without. Gwendolyn enjoyed being a homemaker and creating a comfortable and peaceful home for herself and her family.
Gwendolyn leaves behind her two loving daughters: Tranay Toomer and Myrlie Coleman, her beloved daughter of the heart. Although Myrlie was not her biological daughter, the love they shared was genuine, deep, and lasted for more than 25 years.
She also leaves behind three beautiful grandchildren: Shytoya Toomer, Rambo Toomer, and Maya Koon-Koon; a host of great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends.
Affectionately known as “Gwen,” she brought laughter and joy wherever she went. She loved telling jokes, laughing, singing, dancing, and having a good time. Gwen loved the Lord, praised the Lord, honored the Lord, and carried her faith throughout her life. She also loved the people of 18th Avenue and shared many special memories with them.
One of Gwen’s favorite sayings was, “He or she is no, no good!” Those who knew her could always count on her to speak her mind. Gwen believed in telling the truth, whether people liked it or not. She would often say, “There is no reason to lie. Just be straightforward, and people will respect you for who you are.”
Gwen cherished her family and friends deeply. She also enjoyed watching television and spending time at home. She was a true homebody who loved the comfort and peaceful atmosphere of her home. As long as she had everything she needed, there was nowhere else she would rather be.
Gwen will forever be remembered for her honesty, joyful spirit, wonderful sense of humor, strong faith, and the love she freely gave to her family and friends. Her laughter, unforgettable sayings, and beautiful presence will remain in our hearts forever.
Though she is no longer with us physically, the love and memories she shared will continue to live through everyone who knew and loved her. Gwen will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
