Obituary

Chanese began this journey of life on February 5, 1981, born to Patra and the late Frederick Sweeting. When Chanese was born, she was expected to be a boy. The gender reveal (sonogram) was not as advanced as it is today. After delivery, we were astounded by the surprise of an 8 lbs, 2 oz, sugar, spice, and everything nice bundle of joy.
Chanese was educated in the Dade County public school system, graduating from Miami Lakes Senior High. There, she was a member of the cheering squad and ROTC. After graduating, she joined the US Army. She was discharged from the Army after sustaining injuries to her legs.
After serving in the military, she found her niches, one was hair styling and the other cooking. If you wanted a nice hairdo Chanese would hook you up.
On the other hand, if you wanted a good impromptu meal, she was the girl. Showing up hungry is all she needed to hear. She often went out to eat, and if it was something she or her family enjoyed, she would duplicate the exact recipe at home.
Chanese became one with the late Delvin Whitehead. This union brought forth three beautiful children who will forever hold the memories of their mom in their hearts.
Malachi was her first born and the first boy born to our family. His Papa Squeak was so glad to have another male added to the family for he was the only male amongst a group of women for a long time. Genesis was her girl, who Chanese often said showed personality from a little tot. Micah was her protégé. They had a very special bond; often he’d fall asleep, tagging at her ear lobe. Alexis was last but not least. She was the daughter she loved from another mother.
Chanese was part of a rare occurrence. She, Tara, and Anthony were all born on the same day years apart, and they were siblings’ children. Unfortunately, a link in the chain has been broken.
She leaves to cherish her memories forever: her mother, Patra Sweeting; children, Malachi, Genesis, Micah, and Alexis; sisters, Chaquel and Lachanta (Smoak); nieces, Tavie, TyAsia, and Diammona; and grandnieces, aunts, cousins, and a host of friends.
