Obituary
Anthony Leonard Austin, affectionately known as “Bula”—a name lovingly given to him by his grandmother, Lucy Mae—was born on February 11, 1957, in Miami (Overtown), Florida, to the late Thomas Austin, Jr., and Martha Lois Bridges.
Bula received his education through the Miami-Dade Public School System, attending Dunbar Elementary, Bunche Park Elementary, North Dade Middle, and proudly graduating from North Miami Beach Senior High School in 1975 with a scholarship for the arts. Drawing was one of many gifts he had.
Under the guidance of his mother, Bula began his career working in the Environmental Department at North General Hospital. His strong work ethic and determination led him to transfer to the hospital nutrition department, where he discovered his love for cooking. This passion blossomed into a career in the culinary arts, and through his remarkable skill, Bula became a talented Chef. His culinary expertise allowed him to cater and serve many of Miami’s most notable events and celebrations.
Bula was known far and wide as the life of the party — a debonair gentleman and dancing machine whose infectious smile and spirit could bring joy to any room. Yet beyond his charm and energy, he was also a man of depth and reflection. From his personal trials and triumphs, he authored a powerful book of poetry titled “Living Within the Spirit.” In it, he shared his testimony of perseverance — from his struggles in the slums of Opa-Locka and life as a drug abuser, street hustler, and ex-felon, to his transformation through faith, grace, and redemption. Anthony was a member of the Koinonia Worship Center under the leadership of Dr. Eric H. Jones Jr., Senior Pastor.
On October 23, 2025, Anthony “Bula” Austin was called home to glory to join his dad, mother, and beloved brothers—Thomas Austin, Jr., Zachery Emmanuel Austin, and Ovis Eugene Austin.
He leaves behind cherished memories and an everlasting legacy of love, laughter, and faith. Anthony’s vibrant spirit will forever live on in the hearts of his devoted sister, Kara Davis-Blue (Ralph), along with a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives, and friends who will continue to celebrate the light he shared.
