Obituary

Some people leave behind memories. Others leave behind a way of life. Mama left both. Her legacy will continue to live on through every life she touched.

To know Mama was to experience a love that asked for nothing in return. She had a heart that welcomed everyone, hands that were always busy serving someone else, and a faith in God that guided every step she took. She never met a stranger for long because before you knew it, you had become family. Whether you needed a warm meal, a listening ear, a prayer, or simply someone to believe in you, Mama was there.

Born on July 25, 1937, in Greenville, Florida, Mama was raised with strong values, unwavering faith, and a servant’s heart. At the age of 19, she moved to Miami, Florida, where she began building a beautiful life rooted in God, family, and service to others.

Above all else, Mama loved the Lord. Her relationship with Christ was the foundation of her life and the reason she loved so freely. As a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Overtown, she lived her faith every day not only through worship, but through the kindness she extended to everyone she met. She believed that if God had blessed her, then she was meant to be a blessing to someone else.

Her desire to care for others led her to Miami Dade College, where she earned her nursing degree. She dedicated many years to serving patients at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital, and later through Catalinos Nurses Registry. To Mama, nursing was never just a profession, it was her calling. She cared for every patient with compassion, dignity, and genuine love, touching countless lives throughout her career. Her dedication to healthcare earned her the prestigious Who’s Who Award for Healthcare Workers of America, but those who knew her understood that her greatest reward was simply knowing she had made a difference in someone’s life.

If there was one thing people will always remember about Mama, it was her servant’s heart. She would truly give the shirt off her back to help anyone in need. She gave without expecting anything in return, loved without conditions, and served without seeking recognition. Her home was always open, her table always had room for one more, and her heart never seemed to run out of love. Countless people can say that at one point in their lives, Mama helped them in some way. That was simply who she was.

One of Mama’s greatest expressions of love came from her kitchen. For our family, Thanksgiving simply wasn’t Thanksgiving without Mama’s famous homemade sweet potato pies. They were more than a family favorite they were a tradition, a labor of love, and something everyone looked forward to year after year. And she didn’t need a holiday to make people smile. On any ordinary day, Mama would decide to make homemade ice cream simply because it brought her joy to make others happy. Those moments may have seemed simple at the time, but today they have become some of the family’s most treasured memories.

Of all the titles she held throughout her life, none meant more to her than Mother. Grandmother. Mama.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory her beloved daughters, Sandra Hapuarachchi and Willa McCullough Vincent; her loving grandchildren, Matthew McCullough, Markus Vincent, Maynara Vincent, and Maya Vincent; her adored great-grandchildren, Jayden McCullough, Lovely-Marie McCullough, and Yasiah McCullough; and her cherished goddaughter, Latonia Seymour.

She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, dear friends, neighbors, church family, former patients, and all those whose lives were forever touched by her kindness, generosity, and unwavering love.

While our hearts grieve her absence, we find peace knowing she has entered into eternal rest with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy of faith, compassion, generosity, and unconditional love will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
